The GMC trucks that rolled off the ships and onto the beaches during the Normandy landings will always remain a symbol of liberation, because an army cannot exist on a campaign without transport and logistical support. The GMC, a 2.5-ton, 6-wheel-drive, canvas-covered truck of which more than 800,000 were built, was to trucks what the Jeep was to light vehicles.
