The full scale fighting that erupted in February 2022 evolved through several stages, with one of the most challenging being the summer of 2022, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine held back enemy strike groups in the South and North-East. The territories where direct clashes occurred were heavily mined, leading to combat zones being saturated with hundreds of thousands of anti personnel and anti tank mines.

In addition to these, unexploded aircraft bombs, mortar shells, and ammunition remained in the ground. Demining, engineering reconnaissance, and the installation of mine explosive barriers are carried out by combat engineer units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Most Ukrainian sappers are versatile specialists capable of performing a wide range of tasks. Their work is needed everywhere; they operate in different areas of hostilities and provide engineering support to many units.

Sappers carry out assigned tasks not only in the second echelon of defense but also at the front line, ahead of combat positions. Detection dogs also assist sappers in locating explosive objects.
