The Titanic gained tragic notoriety due to the events that took place during its maiden voyage on April 14, 1912. The ‘Queen of the Seas’, sailing for the White Star Line, was to carry 1,316 passengers from Southampton to New York. At around 11:40 p.m. during the night, the British luxury liner collided with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and was torn open on the starboard side over a length of almost 100 m. On April 15 at around 0:20 a.m., the Titanic sank and 1,503 of the 2,206 people on board were killed. The 46,329 GRT large and 267 m long ship had a water displacement of 66,000 t. –
