Honda started appearing in Formula One races in 1964, and in that August's German Grand Prix they debuted their RA271, which had its 1.5-liter 60-degree V12 engine in a novel transverse layout. The following year - the last for 1.5-liter cars - it was succeeded by the RA272, which in Richie Ginther's hands memorably took Honda's maiden victory at the pinnacle of motorsport, before it too was superseded in the Italian GP in 1966 by the RA273 with its 3-liter engine. Featuring a lightweight monocoque frame with aluminum panels and powered by a 90-degree V12 engine, the RA273 was driven by Ginther and Ronnie Bucknum, before the legendary John Surtees took over for the first six races of 1967, earning a podium finish at the South African GP that opened the season.
