The M24 Chaffee was developed as the successor to the M3 and M5 Stuart light tanks and was formally adopted in 1944. It featured sloped armour on the turret and hull, and carried a powerful 75mm main gun originally developed for the B-25 bomber. Unusually for a U.S. tank, it used a torsion bar suspension for improved mobility. The Chaffee saw action before the end of World War II, supporting Allied forces across France, Western Europe and Italy, and went on to serve in major conflicts throughout the 20th century, including the Korean War and the Indochina War.
