The trusty Schwimmwagen served WWII German forces with distinction, taking on tricky off road surfaces and even water obstacles in style. It had a welded sheet metal monocoque body and a 1,130 cc, 25 hp air cooled 4-cylinder engine that it could get 80 km/h out of on land, and 10 km/h in the water. When fitted with wide wheels, it was even more capable off road, and some Schwimmwagens even had MG34 machine guns. Between the end of 1942 and Fall 1944, some 14,000 Schwimmwagens rolled off the production lines, and they were sent to a variety of locations with a range of briefs, from pioneer units to Fallschirmjager paratroopers. Its superlative adaptability made it a vital cog in the German war effort.
