The HMHS Britannic was the third and largest of the White Star Line’s Olympic class ocean liners, sister ship to Titanic and Olympic.

Originally designed as a luxury passenger liner, she was requisitioned by the British government during World War I and converted into a hospital ship before entering commercial service.

Launched in 1914 and commissioned as His Majesty's Hospital Ship (HMHS) Britannic in 1915, the vessel was outfitted with medical wards, operating theatres, and accommodations for over 3,000 patients and medical staff.

Painted white with large red crosses and green stripes, she was protected under the Hague Convention as a non combatant vessel.

Despite her upgrades and improved safety features compared to Titanic, Britannic struck a mine in the Aegean Sea on November 21, 1916, and sank within 55 minutes. Remarkably, 1,035 of the 1,065 people on board survived, thanks in part to better evacuation protocols and lifeboats.

Though her career was brief, HMHS Britannic remains a symbol of wartime sacrifice and maritime innovation—a grand liner repurposed for humanitarian service.
