HMS York was the first of the York-class heavy cruisers of the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war broke out in September 1939, it served as a cover for the transport fleet. In October, it began to hunt down German raiding ships. In April 1940, it transported army troops to Norway to participate in the Norwegian Campaign. In March 1941, a fleet covering the transportation of army troops arrived in Souda Bay, Crete. On the night of the 25th, it was hit by two demolition boats loaded with explosives from the Italian Navy in Souda Bay, causing it to lose its combat effectiveness. To avoid sinking, the British navy towed it to a sandbar and ran aground. Since it could not be repaired, it could only be used as an anti-aircraft fort. It was later blown up by the Luftwaffe. The wreckage was not demolished in Greece until after the war between Britain and Greece.
