The Nakajima B5N1 took its first flight in January of 1937. The aircraft was considered quite advanced as a carrier based aircraft. The aircraft was designed with a lowered mono wing, which folded for storage and possessed a wide track retractable landing gear that folded inward. Compared to the Fairey Swordfish and the TBD Devastator, the Kate was far superior but did falter due to its lack of self defensive armament, necessitating an escort. The B5N1 was phased out in 1939 for the more powerful and faster B5N2. The B5N2 served in a variety of roles throughout the war.
