In 1939, at the request of TWA, the Constellation project was initiated. This company desired a 40 seat transport aircraft. The prototype first flew on January 9, 1943. Due to the war, the Constellation began its career under a military designation, C-69, and was used by the U.S. Air Force's Air Transport Command. After the war, the first two civilian customers were TWA and Pan American. The latter was the first airline to operate its Constellation on the New York-Bermuda route. TWA, for its part, inaugurated the first U.S.-Europe service on February 6, 1947.
