The Supermarine Spitfire is the legendary British fighter, designed by R.J. Mitchell, forming the backbone of RAF fighter forces during World War II. The Spitfire distinguished itself not only in the Battle of Britain, where it played a key role in defending British skies, but also on many other fronts. It featured exceptional manoeuverability, an outstanding Rolls Royce Merlin engine, and its iconic elliptical wing shape. The Spitfire was used by virtually all Allied air forces and, postwar, by many other countries.
