When the Swedish government wanted to acquire a fast fighter aircraft immediately after the Second World War, it commissioned three prototypes of a new aircraft from the SAAB company under the designation R 1001. It first flew on September 1, 1948, and was given the designation SAAB J 29 Tunnan, jokingly called the Flying Barrel.
