The Curtiss P-40E was the successor to the Hawk 81A, better known as the Tomahawk. It first flew on May 22, 1941, under the designation Hawk 87A. Great Britain and other Commonwealth countries ordered 540 aircraft, which they called the Kittyhawk 1A. A second order for 1,500 aircraft went to the US Army Air Force, which operated them as the Curtiss P-40E and later sold them back to Great Britain under the Land Lease agreement.
