The development of the DC-6 began during World War II to meet the US Air Force's need for long range military cargo aircraft. Immediately after the war, it was converted for civilian use, fitted with a pressurised cabin, and equipped to carry 52 to 68 passengers. The first airline to receive the DC-6 was United Air Lines in April 1947. 286 DC-6Bs were built until production ceased in 1958. The Heller variant shown here is a DC-6B ‘what if’ version, depicting how it might have appeared at Air France.
