Launched in 1925 and rebuilt in the late 1930s to the state depicted in the model, it participated in the famous attack on Pearl Harbor. The Akagi sank on June 5, 1942, during the Battle of Midway, after being hit by bombs dropped by American bombers. All 263 of its crew died.
