During the reign of Elizabeth I, England began establishing its own maritime trade routes. One of these voyages, disguised as a trip to Egypt, was organised by Francis Drake in utmost secrecy. On December 13, 1577, five sailing ships left Plymouth bound for Alexandria (the Pelican, Elizabethan, Marigold, Swan, and Benedict). Only after reaching the Pacific Ocean beyond Magellan's straight line did Drake rename the Pelican Golden Hind to perfect the disguise of his mission.
