The German Type VII C submarine was by far the most produced submarine. This variant was commissioned in April 1940 and formed the backbone of the German fleet during the Battle of the Atlantic. Only one boat survives, now a museum ship in Laboe, Germany. Type VII submarines were single hulled ocean going vessels, distinguished by their external saddle tanks. More than 700 units were commissioned.
