The ASMP program was launched in 1978 to develop an optimised medium range air to surface missile for the future Mirage 2000N. It was decided to convert 18 Mirage IVA bombers into IVP models, a so called penetration version, capable of carrying the CT52 detection container with cameras and infrared thermal detectors, until the new bomber entered service. The first operational squadron at Mont-de-Marsan was equipped with the new supersonic missile on May 1, 1986. This missile carried a nuclear warhead and could also be fitted with a conventional warhead for use as a deterrent.
