The L-1049 Super Constellation was developed from the L-749 Constellation and introduced in 1950. The conversion of the L-749 represented the largest lengthening ever carried out on a propeller driven aircraft. The addition of fuselage sections increased the length by 5.59 meters (11 feet). Other significant changes included overall airframe reinforcement, rectangular windows, larger fuel tanks, and the use of new engines. The first L-1049 entered service with Eastern on December 15, 1951. The largest Super Connie fleets were operated by TWA and Eastern Air Lines.
